Thanks very much for all your hard work, Lorenzo. I can really appreciate
how busy you are, especially while you’re still developing so many things
at the same time as doing reviews.

Personally, I also feel a bit bad that I haven't been able to contribute
anywhere near as much as you have. I still have a lot of catching up to do.

Right now, as David probably knows well, my colleagues and I are working
on both FS large folios[1] and mTHP[2]. I really feel that I’ll be able
to spend more time on THP-related work and reviews.

Lorenzo, you have my deepest respect.

You shouldn't, I often feel bad about how I haven't done X kind of work, or
Y kind of work, etc. I think feeling this way is just a product of working
on kernel stuff.

The scope is so broad that it's hard not to feel like you're accomplishing
everything you could, no matter what!

Thank you very much for your hard work. Over the past two years, THP has
been extremely busy, especially with the addition of mTHP-related
features, which required a great deal of time and effort from the
maintainer. In my main role at my company, I am also responsible for THP
and memory reclaim functionality, so I fully understand how demanding
your work has been. Once again, thank you for all your hard work.

I also am relatively familiar with the implementation of THP. If David
is interested in my R: or need some features implemented, feel free to
let me know. I'm willing to help out and reduce the pressure on the
maintainers.

Thanks Usama! :) I know we started off with some fireworks on review 😅 but
you've always been fantastic to work with and it's been great to see you
develop as a contributor.

BTW, I did want to say but never got around to it - I love how you've
approached the PUD THP stuff - i.e. getting the huge swap stuff sorted
first, gradually building things up, etc.!

You've always given interesting sessions + input at LSF and have had great
insights on how stuff interacts with the Meta fleet also! :)

It was especially interesting to hear that 512 MiB huge pages have actually
resulted in far less memory usage than you might expect :)

I will still be busy upstream with the 4 other maintainerships to keep me
busy, along with series both in kvmarm and core mm so don't worry I'm not
going anywhere :)

And as I said to David and others, always feel free to cc- me or ping me
off-list etc. if I can be of use for THP stuff, even though I'm taking a
break from the maintainership side!

You certainly can.  Thank you very much for everything you have done for
THP and for all the people whose work you have reviewed.

You and David were among the first people to review the first patch I
sent.  Later, SJ, Zi Yan, Mark Brown, and many others also began helping
me.  Although I kept making mistakes, I genuinely wanted to learn enough
to share some of the review and maintenance load that you have been
carrying.

I still have a great deal to learn, but I have started to slow down, think
more carefully, and improve both the technical quality of my work and the
way I submit it.  The help I have received from the community means a lot
to me, and your patience and reviews were an important part of that.

I know none of this changes the workload that led you to step down, but
reading this made me realize again how much time and care you gave to all
of us.  I will be at LPC this year, and I hope I can thank you in person.

I will also be more disciplined about patch preparation, testing evidence,
email formatting, revision history, and the overall submission and review
workflow.  I hope that, over time, I can take on a useful share of the work
rather than add to it.

Thank you again, Lorenzo.  I will miss having you as a THP co-maintainer,
though I am very glad that you will still be around.

I'm glad I was able to help :) and mistakes are just part of being human, I
make the dumbest mistakes _constantly_ :>) so the key is really trying to
always find ways to quickly fix things up and improve.

I really think going over and thinking carefully about the code and the
approach is really helpful.

Also review really helps with getting perspective on what other people are
doing and how things fit together so is super helpful for improving too
(part of why I do a lot of it!).

Am very glad the feedback has helped :) I know that sometimes I am not
quite as patient as I could be but I do try to do my best, and felt I've
developed over time as a reviewer, albeit never quite being perfect on that
front :)

Amazing, yeah I think the key thing to realise is that while feedback can
be painful (for me too!), everybody is aiming at the same thing - trying to
make things better and improve the kernel for everybody.

Aw, man ... I totally get needing to step back, but we can't let you
disappear from THP that easily :) You've put a crazy amount of time
into it, and your reviews and judgment have made a massive difference.
We'd miss you badly.

Could we talk you into staying on as a reviewer for now? Zero pressure to
keep up with everything or carry the maintainer load. Just hang around,
jump in whenever you feel like it, and come straight back as a maintainer
whenever life gives you the room.

I'm not going anywhere in terms of upstream kernel - and as David suggested
- I am happy to be pinged on threads where my input would be helpful :)

But in general I'm dropping the R: for now as I feel it wouldn't be quite
correct to keep it, as I can't really give much time at all to THP, and it
wouldn't be fair for me to be listed but remain inactive.

I may very well revisit this in the future, but for the time being I think
this is the best way forwards.

THP is, unfortunately, one of the busiest MM components, and also the ones where
we have to deal with significant legacy code, many suboptimal past design
decisions ... and plenty of ideas for improvements that require constant
pushback to not make the situation even worse. The time spent on discussions
alone is massive.

Fortunately we have a growing list of reviewers.

It's mostly thankless work, really; but I'd like to express my sincere gratitude
for all the work you put into co-maintaing THP over (/me checks MAINTAINERS)
more than 1 year!

Yes indeed. It was a very difficult decision, but the sheer throughput and
attention required has reached a point where it's become infeasible for me
time-wise.

I do hate to leave you with all of that, but you can always ask me to pop
into a discussion or cc- me, so hopefully that'll help :)

And as you say, we have an amazing community of reviewers who all help
enormously.

Absolutely and I've really loved seeing how people have developed - Lance
in particular has grown wonderfully, Zi is a star, and in general every
