[PATCH printk v1] printk: ringbuffer: Add KUnit test
Posted by John Ogness 2 days, 11 hours ago
From: Thomas Weißschuh <thomas.weissschuh@linutronix.de>

The KUnit test validates the correct operation of the ringbuffer.
A separate dedicated ringbuffer is used so that the global printk
ringbuffer is not touched.

For those not familiar with KUnit, you can easily run this test
doing something like this:

$ ./tools/testing/kunit/kunit.py run \
  --arch=x86_64 \
  --qemu_args "-enable-kvm -smp 8" \
  --kunitconfig kernel/printk

+ * The test works by starting "num_online_cpus() - 1" writer threads, each

Awesome -- I'm glad to see this make it as a KUnit test.

It's a little unusual for a KUnit test -- particularly since it is
time-based and uses lots of threads. This isn't a problem, but it's
definitely a good thing that it's marked as slow. Additionally, KUnit
doesn't track any extra threads spawned, so it requires a bit more
care.

There are a couple of issues (e.g., it crashes on non-SMP systems, a
potential race, etc) and some minor suggestions below. In short, it'd
be a good idea to move some of the initialisation and checks into the
main test function, rather than the helper threads. Equally, it looks
like there are a bunch of variables shared between kthreads — do these
need to be checked with READ_ONCE()/WRITE_ONCE(), or made volatile, or
something?

In fact, I'm not sure why there's a separate start_test() and
test_readerwriter() function -- or indeed, a separate kthread? Am I
missing something, or could everything start_test() does be done from
the main test function/kthread?

Regardless, with a few of the tweaks below, this runs fine for me
here, and it's great to see it.

This check needs to be in the test_readerwriter() function to work
(or, at least, in the same kthread). Otherwise:
(a) KUnit doesn't know which thread to abort, and
(b) the other threads will continue anyway.

Can we allocate this in the main test_readerwriter() function. I think
there can be a race otherwise. Equally, if we use something like
kunit_kcalloc() instead, KUnit will clean up the allocation for us
when the test exits (even if it fails).

Should this be WRITE_ONCE()?

Again, WRITE_ONCE()?

Again, READ_ONCE()?

This, too, _might_ need the WRITE_ONCE() treatment.

I'm not sure I fully understand why this couldn't be run multiple
times. I definitely see why you wouldn't want to have it running
concurrently with itself, but is there a way to have it 'reset' any
state to allow it to be re-run without a reboot.

Not a problem if it isn't, just curious. :-)

I don't think there's any guarantee that test_running has been
allocated by this point.

Of course, given the msleep() above, it's very likely that it would
be, but it might make more sense to allocate it in this function
before spinning off any extra threads.

(As a bonus, you could then use kunit_kcalloc() to have it
automatically cleaned up when the test exits, regardless of whether or
not it succeeds.)

Also, you might want to check test_running[i].runstate using
READ_ONCE() or similar -- could a compiler perhaps "optimize out"
further reads to it as-is: it doesn't seem to be 'volatile' or
similar?

Again, should this be put under READ_ONCE() or an explicit atomic or
something? Or check that the thread has terminated?

> +       kfree(test_running);

If the kunit_kzalloc() function is used above, this could be removed.

Agreed.

You are not missing anything. It is definitely awkward, mostly because
it was taken from parts of my own personal testing software. I will
implement all your suggestions. Thanks for the detailed review!
