I guess this is a cultural idiom because "tread carefully" is a common
phrase in British English at least. For example:

  Investors need to tread carefully, as irrational exuberance has a
  habit of eclipsing common sense in the world of tech.

Hm. I've never seen/heard anything like this. I think the meaning is
a bit different, - "thread" is about building something on top of this,
the base might be not very stable.  Sure thing this change might be
omitted.  It's just something which catches my eyes, but I'm not a
native English speaker for sure.
