This describes only some of the boards and often in a fairly abbreviated fashion. Restructure it so that each board has its own documentation file in the docs/system/arm/ subdirectory. This will hopefully encourage us to write board documentation that describes the board in detail, rather than a few brief paragraphs in a single long page. The table of contents should also help users to find the board they care about faster. Once the structure is in place we'll be able to move microvm.rst from the top-level docs/ directory. All the text from the old page is retained, except for the final paragraph ("A Linux 2.6 test image is available on the QEMU web site. More information is available in the QEMU mailing-list archive."), which is deleted. The git history shows this was originally added in reference to the integratorcp board (at that time the only Arm board that was supported), and has subsequently gradually been further and further separated from the integratorcp documentation by the insertion of other board documentation sections. It's extremely out of date and no longer accurate, since AFAICT there isn't an integratorcp kernel on the website any more; so better deleted than retained. Use the +``qemu-system-aarch64`` executable to simulate a 64-bit Arm machine. +You can use either ``qemu-system-arm`` or ``qemu-system-aarch64`` +to simulate a 32-bit Arm machine: in general, command lines that +work for ``qemu-system-arm`` will behave the same when used with +``qemu-system-aarch64``. + +QEMU has generally good support for Arm guests. It has support for +nearly fifty different machines. The reason we support so many is that +Arm hardware is much more widely varying than x86 hardware. Arm CPUs +are generally built into "system-on-chip" (SoC) designs created by +many different companies with different devices, and these SoCs are +then built into machines which can vary still further even if they use +the same SoC. Even with fifty boards QEMU does not cover more than a +small fraction of the Arm hardware ecosystem. + +The situation for 64-bit Arm is fairly similar, except that we don't +implement so many different machines. + +As well as the more common "A-profile" CPUs (which have MMUs and will +run Linux) QEMU also supports "M-profile" CPUs such as the Cortex-M0, +Cortex-M4 and Cortex-M33 (which are microcontrollers used in very +embedded boards). For most boards the CPU type is fixed (matching what +the hardware has), so typically you don't need to specify the CPU type +by hand, except for special cases like the ``virt`` board. + +Choosing a board model +=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D + +For QEMU's Arm system emulation, you must specify which board +model you want to use with the ``-M`` or ``--machine`` option; +there is no default. + +Because Arm systems differ so much and in fundamental ways, typically +operating system or firmware images intended to run on one machine +will not run at all on any other. This is often surprising for new +users who are used to the x86 world where every system looks like a +standard PC. (Once the kernel has booted, most userspace software +cares much less about the detail of the hardware.) + +If you already have a system image or a kernel that works on hardware +and you want to boot with QEMU, check whether QEMU lists that machine +in its ``-machine help`` output. If it is listed, then you can probably +use that board model. If it is not listed, then unfortunately your image +will almost certainly not boot on QEMU. (You might be able to +extract the filesystem and use that with a different kernel which +boots on a system that QEMU does emulate.) + +If you don't care about reproducing the idiosyncrasies of a particular +bit of hardware, such as small amount of RAM, no PCI or other hard +disk, etc., and just want to run Linux, the best option is to use the +``virt`` board. This is a platform which doesn't correspond to any +real hardware and is designed for use in virtual machines. You'll +need to compile Linux with a suitable configuration for running on +the ``virt`` board. ``virt`` supports PCI, virtio, recent CPUs and +large amounts of RAM. It also supports 64-bit CPUs. + +Board-specific documentation +=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D + +Unfortunately many of the Arm boards QEMU supports are currently +undocumented; you can get a complete list by running +``qemu-system-aarch64 --machine help``. =20 .. toctree:: =20 --=20 2.20.1 From nobody Sun Oct 5 14:30:46 2025 Delivered-To: importer@patchew.org Received-SPF: pass (zohomail.com: domain of gnu.org designates 209.51.188.17 as permitted sender) client-ip=209.51.188.17; envelope-from=qemu-devel-bounces+importer=patchew.org@nongnu.org; helo=lists.gnu.org; Authentication-Results: mx.zohomail.com; dkim=pass; spf=pass (zohomail.com: domain of gnu.org designates 209.51.188.17 as permitted sender) smtp.mailfrom=qemu-devel-bounces+importer=patchew.org@nongnu.org; dmarc=pass(p=none dis=none) header.from=linaro.org ARC-Seal: i=1; a=rsa-sha256; t=1584013749; cv=none; d=zohomail.com; s=zohoarc; b=hZli26T/GZ8ESYb/mjjKRL9dL6hkdwe2BEpkbsVYTcjy97CZF/beu1Noc/TcFdBJX4UPNPtbFLvooDyjMXX2HbCvb5qQPhQc3XGyHmneo5CwDXd/A0h+HbJ2rS8fII20XfV4+wQhU03RktnoTwF+4GUJn87r3XN2AEXFpSy7Ye8= ARC-Message-Signature: i=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=zohomail.com; s=zohoarc; t=1584013749; h=Content-Type:Content-Transfer-Encoding:Date:From:In-Reply-To:List-Subscribe:List-Post:List-Id:List-Archive:List-Help:List-Unsubscribe:MIME-Version:Message-ID:References:Sender:Subject:To; bh=x0nPLg6o5kFBPoh4kuF9kT3BgcDTmNXl/C7a8wQonTY=; b=kEj4TapxKgT9WHkbFHrbGvUHzU8w/CgCE/2ukoxJ1x9Y/MrMWS6fWt2lxeMRP6BtKQAw/7yUeP18GjT+Pc7Rv2OOuy3+K1sUtngU0hiL+1Kts16myHuTcCe5JnQ8tyTwhtEVQwT/bfg7N8wKFKvzWsGFEOhb+EDolVJbANk0QT0= ARC-Authentication-Results: i=1; mx.zohomail.com; dkim=pass; spf=pass (zohomail.com: domain of gnu.org designates 209.51.188.17 as permitted sender) smtp.mailfrom=qemu-devel-bounces+importer=patchew.org@nongnu.org; dmarc=pass header.from= (p=none dis=none) header.from= Return-Path: Received: from lists.gnu.org (lists.gnu.org [209.51.188.17]) by mx.zohomail.com with SMTPS id 1584013749679155.99928490496882; Thu, 12 Mar 2020 04:49:09 -0700 (PDT) Received: from localhost ([::1]:39940 helo=lists1p.gnu.org) by lists.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.90_1) (envelope-from ) id 1jCMKq-0004JM-L3 for importer@patchew.org; Thu, 12 Mar 2020 07:49:08 -0400 Received: from eggs.gnu.org ([2001:470:142:3::10]:58208) by lists.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.90_1) (envelope-from ) id 1jCMGI-0003l4-Oa for qemu-devel@nongnu.org; Thu, 12 Mar 2020 07:44:27 -0400 Received: from Debian-exim by eggs.gnu.org with spam-scanned (Exim 4.71) (envelope-from ) id 1jCMGH-000285-NA for qemu-devel@nongnu.org; Thu, 12 Mar 2020 07:44:26 -0400 Received: from mail-wm1-x32b.google.com ([2a00:1450:4864:20::32b]:38141) by eggs.gnu.org with esmtps (TLS1.0:RSA_AES_128_CBC_SHA1:16) (Exim 4.71) (envelope-from ) id 1jCMGH-00027B-Gn for qemu-devel@nongnu.org; Thu, 12 Mar 2020 07:44:25 -0400 Received: by mail-wm1-x32b.google.com with SMTP id h83so2363576wmf.3 for ; Thu, 12 Mar 2020 04:44:24 -0700 (PDT) Received: from orth.archaic.org.uk (orth.archaic.org.uk.
